Understanding Salvation
  • As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: Romans 3:10
  • For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;  Romans 3:23

Examples of sin are seen in the Ten Commandments. Here are a few:

  • Honour thy father and thy mother… Exodus 20:12a
  • Thou shalt not steal.  Exodus 20:15
  • Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour [lie].  Exodus 20:16
  • For the wages [payment] of sin is death… Romans 6:23a
  • Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Romans 5:12
  • Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate [pedophile], nor abusers of themselves with mankind [homosexual], Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9b-10

Many people think that they can pay for their sins by living a good life, getting baptized, keeping the ten commandments, or various other good deeds. While doing all of these things are good, the Bible teaches that good deeds cannot pay for our sins.

  •  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
  • Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Titus 3:5
  • Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh [person] be justified [declared righteous, saved from our sins and hell] in his sight… Romans 3:20a
  • Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.  Galatians 2:16
  • For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.  Romans 6:10
  • But God commendeth [showed] his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Romans 5:8
  • Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation [satisfaction; payment; atonement] for our sins.  1 John 4:10
  • That if thou shalt confess [agree with God] with thy mouth the Lord Jesus [believe Jesus is actually the Lord], and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  Romans 10:9
  • For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  John 3:16
To be saved, we must believe Jesus alone paid for our sins when He died and rose again. We cannot put our trust in our good deeds and Jesus to pay for our sins – but Jesus’ payment alone.
 
  • Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.  Romans 3:28
The Bible teaches that if we believe Jesus paid for our sins when He died on the cross and rose again, we will not be ashamed of it. One way we should not be ashamed to express our faith to God is by praying and telling God that we are trusting Him to save us. Although simply praying a prayer does not save us, it is a good way to express our faith to God.

  • For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.  Romans 10:13
